Max Verstappen stated that the willingness of Formula 1 and the FIA to listen to the drivers was fundamental to the discussions that led to adjustments to the power unit regulations for the coming years. The four-time world champion highlighted the organizations’ open stance as a decisive factor in advancing the negotiations.
The Red Bull Racing driver was one of the strongest critics of the rules planned for 2026. At one point, he even suggested that he might consider leaving the sport if significant changes were not made to the original proposal.
Before the Miami Grand Prix, some changes had already been implemented to reduce the effects of the so-called ‘super-clipping’ and the excessive energy-saving strategies. In addition, new meetings were held to seek solutions regarding the distribution of power between the internal combustion engine and the batteries.
As a result of the discussions, it was decided that from 2027 there would be an increased share of power from the internal combustion engine through a greater fuel flow. In 2028, the power distribution should reach a 60% to 40% split, with 60% provided by the combustion engine and 40% by the electrical systems.
Commenting on the process, Verstappen indicated that his experience and track record in the sport may have contributed to giving his opinion more weight in the talks. Still, he stressed that the most important aspect was the receptiveness demonstrated by Formula 1 and the FIA during the meetings held throughout the season.
“I think this grows a bit. The more you achieve in the sport, the more voice you may have. But I’m very happy. At the start of the year we had some meetings with FOM and, of course, with other drivers and the FIA,” he stated.
The Dutchman praised the way the entities conducted the discussions and reiterated that the drivers aim to contribute to the sport’s evolution: “It’s great that they have an open mind and listen to the drivers. I think that, at least most of us, speak with the sport’s best interests in mind and we want to make it a better product,” he added.
Verstappen concluded by saying that the suggestions presented by the competitors had that goal from the outset: “That’s why you make recommendations, and what we’re trying to do certainly is the right thing,” the four-time champion wrapped up.
