Formula 1 had a Saturday marked by new repercussions from the Monaco Grand Prix and by technical debates involving Red Bull and the FIA. George Russell and Max Verstappen found themselves at the center of attention, each for different reasons in the 2026 season.
Russell reacted to Mercedes’ decision to withdraw the appeal over the penalties handed out in Monaco. The Briton stated that the team had explored all options to try to overturn the case, but concluded there were not enough arguments to proceed. Now the focus shifts to the remainder of the season.
The Monaco episode also continued to generate criticism. Guenther Steiner described the FIA’s decision to restore Pierre Gasly to third place after Alpine’s appeal as a “disaster.” For the former Haas chief, the reversal created a coherence problem, since other drivers served similar penalties during the race and could not regain positions later.
Russell also became a topic of analysis by Claire Williams. The former Williams chief stated that she saw the Mercedes driver as a strong title contender, but acknowledged that Kimi Antonelli surprised at the start of the season. She highlighted that Russell has already faced a retirement in Canada, a Monaco penalty, and a loss of power in Barcelona, and said she hopes that bad luck does not follow him.
At Red Bull, Laurent Mekies again questioned the FIA’s criteria for releasing performance updates to power units. The official stated that the body must have “extreme certainty” before permitting upgrades through the ADUO system, especially since the analysis considers only the internal combustion engine.
Verstappen also appeared in a survey of points lost due to mechanical issues. The Dutch driver leads the list, with an estimated 26 points squandered by faults in 2026, followed by Russell, with 25. Lewis Hamilton, on the other hand, is the only driver on the grid who has completed every lap of the season so far.
