Formula 1 Announces Portugal’s Return to the Calendar Starting 2027 Season

December 16, 2025

Portugal is back on the Formula 1 calendar. On Tuesday (16), the top category of world motor sports announced a two-year agreement starting from 2027 for the realization of GPs at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve, in Portimão. In this way, the country will return to host the category after six years.

The Algarve International Circuit, located in Portimão, hosted the F1 in the 2020 and 2021 seasons, during the pandemic period. The Portuguese track, despite having a short history in the category, witnessed a historic moment: it was there that Lewis Hamilton surpassed Michael Schumacher’s number of victories in 2021. The Englishman, now at Ferrari, also won in 2020.

“I’m very happy to see Portimão return to the F1 calendar and for this sport to continue to awaken the passion of our Portuguese fans. The circuit provides excitement from the first turn to the checkered flag, and its energy keeps fans on their feet,” said Stefano Domenicali, president and CEO of F1.

“The interest and demand to host a Formula 1 Grand Prix have never been higher, so I would like to thank Prime Minister Luís Montenegro, Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion of Portugal Manuel Castro Almeida, Secretary of State for Tourism, Trade and Services Pedro Machado, President of Tourism of Portugal Carlos Abade, President of the Regional Tourism Board of Algarve André Gomes, and CEO and President of the Algarve International Circuit Jaime Costa for their support in bringing F1 back to Portugal. I’m looking forward to working together again to ensure that Portimão returns to the calendar in great style,” Domenicali added.

“Portugal is back on the F1 map. The Portuguese Formula 1 Grand Prix will have a direct impact on economic activity, generating opportunities throughout the economic chain, projecting the country as a competitive and reliable destination,” said Manuel Castro Almeida, Minister of Economy and Territorial Cohesion of Portugal.

“The realization of the Grand Prix in the Algarve reinforces our regional development strategy, valuing territories and creating opportunities for local economies. This will be an event that, in addition to being a source of prestige for our country, will enhance Portugal’s image worldwide,” Almeida added.

“We are very happy to host the F1 again in Portugal and at the Autódromo Internacional do Algarve. The Portuguese Grand Prix will showcase the excellence of our circuit and the passion of our fans, giving a strong boost to our tourism, region, and community,” commented Jaime Costa, CEO of the Algarve International Circuit.

“This achievement was only possible thanks to the continuous support – from the beginning – of the Portuguese Government. The unique ‘roller coaster’ layout of Portimão will challenge the best drivers in the world and create a spectacle that fans will love. We are eager to create unforgettable moments and establish new standards of excellence both on and off the track,” Costa added.
