Theophile Nael clinched pole position in the early hours of this Friday (the 6th) for the opening round of the 2026 Formula 3 season. In the qualifying held at the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne, the Campos Racing driver used the final moments to set a time of 1:34.187, earning the top spot for the main race.
Campos Racing also saw Ugo Ugochukwu, the fastest in the free practice, complete the front row. The American led most of the classification but was overtaken by Nael by 0.021 seconds. Freddie Slater, driving a Trident, will start from third position, sharing the second row with Maciej Gladysz, who finished fourth with ART Grand Prix. Nicola Lacorte, from DAMS, and Mattia Colnaghi, from MP Motorsport, complete the group of the six fastest.
Taito Kato, the Japanese driver for ART Grand Prix, will start seventh, with James Wharton, from Prema, alongside him on the fourth row. Brando Badoer, from Rodin, will start ninth, while Noah Stromsted, from Trident, secured tenth on the grid. Enzo Deligny and Bruno del Pino, both with Van Amersfoort, round out the top 12. The Spaniard Bruno del Pino will start on pole for the Sprint race that opens the F3 season.
A sessão que definiu as posições de largada não foi das melhores para os pilotos brasileiros. Pedro Clerot, com um carro preparado pela Rodin, não foi além da 19ª posição, e abrirá a décima fila nas duas corridas do final de semana. Fernando Barrichello, com um carro da AIX Racing, ficou com a 30ª posição e fecha o grid nas duas disputas em Melbourne.
A classificação em Melbourne contou com um acionamento da bandeira vermelha após Matteo de Palo bater contra a barreira de proteção após escapar na curva 10 do circuito. O piloto da Trident se viu obrigado a abandonar a disputa pela pole position.
Ainda nesta sexta-feira, a partir de 21h15, será disputada a corrida Sprint. A corrida principal tem largada marcada para 18h50 de sábado.
