F1 Today: Rafa Câmara Celebrates Debut as Rain Threatens Interlagos

November 4, 2026

Wednesday the 4th was marked by Rafael Câmara’s anticipation for his Formula 1 debut in front of the Brazilian crowd and by a rain forecast that could complicate the Brazilian Grand Prix, especially the qualifying and the race at Interlagos. The day also brought news about Charles Leclerc, who will become a father for the first time, the historic milestone that Lewis Hamilton will reach this weekend, and fresh concerns about the staging of the Qatar Grand Prix.

With activity set to begin on Friday the 6th, preparation for the Brazilian round took center stage in the news cycle. While Câmara prepares to take the wheel of the Haas, the weather outlook points to quite different conditions across the weekend, with heat on Saturday and a sharp temperature drop on Sunday.

Rafael Câmara spoke publicly for the first time about the chance to debut in Formula 1 precisely at the Brazilian Grand Prix. The 21-year-old driver, picked by Haas to replace Esteban Ocon, underscored the importance of starting his Formula 1 journey at home and expressed gratitude for the support he received to reach the grid.

“I’m grateful to the TGR Haas F1 Team for giving me this opportunity, and I also want to thank Ferrari for the ongoing support. Making my F1 debut in Brazil is a special moment for me,” the Brazilian said.

The debut follows Haas’s immediate confirmation of Esteban Ocon’s departure, ending the Frenchman’s season early. With Câmara and Gabriel Bortoleto, from Audi, Interlagos will host two Brazilians on the grid.

Another major topic of the day was the weather forecast for São Paulo. Meteorological information indicates that Friday could offer relatively favorable conditions for the free practices, but the scenario is expected to shift on Saturday, with temperatures near 29°C and a chance of rain during qualifying.

Pulses of rain are forecast mainly between 14:00 and 17:00, the window that coincides with the pole-position battle. If rain does materialize, teams could struggle to pick the right moments to use tires and to complete their quick laps.

On Sunday, the expectation is for a sharp temperature drop, down to around 15°C, along with persistent rain throughout the day. The contrast with Saturday’s heat could completely alter car behavior and force different strategies from those developed during practice.

The situation warrants special attention because Pirelli has chosen softer tires for the Brazil Grand Prix, while Interlagos has undergone resurfacing in several sections. With a wet surface, the behavior of the new asphalt could also influence grip and driver safety.

At Ferrari, Charles Leclerc will follow a different schedule this weekend. The Monégasque announced on Wednesday the birth of Bianca, his first child with Alexandra Saint-Mleux, and will initially stay in Monaco with his family.

As a result, Leclerc will not participate in Thursday press commitments and will only arrive in Brazil on Friday. The driver will also miss TL1, when Dino Beganovic will take over his car, enabling Ferrari to fulfill part of its obligations regarding rookie participation in the free practice sessions.

Lewis Hamilton (GBR) Scuderia Ferrari SF-26 celebrates his second position at the end of the race.

Lewis Hamilton, for his part, will reach a historic milestone at Interlagos. The seven-time world champion will contest his 400th Grand Prix, becoming only the second driver to reach that figure, behind Fernando Alonso.

The Brit arrives at the weekend with a record of 399 starts, 106 wins, 105 pole positions and 209 podiums. The milestone will be achieved on a circuit of special meaning for Hamilton, where he won his first world title back in 2008 at Interlagos.

The battle for the runner-up spot also drew attention. Max Verstappen arrives in Brazil in second place in the Drivers’ Championship, with 261 points, just two ahead of Hamilton. George Russell is fourth with 250, followed by Leclerc with 245, keeping four drivers in the hunt behind the already champion Kimi Antonelli.

Off the track, the future of the 2026 calendar returned to the forefront of concerns. Qatar ceded the right to host the Nations Championship finals in 2028 and 2032, a decision tied to the ongoing Middle East conflict that has raised doubts about the feasibility of other major sporting events in the region.

The shift does not directly affect Formula 1 at this moment, and the Qatar Grand Prix remains officially scheduled for November 29. Nevertheless, the regional situation also keeps the Abu Dhabi round, set for December 6, under scrutiny, while potential calendar changes remain under discussion.

The preparation for Interlagos also includes Colton Herta taking part in TL1 for Cadillac. The American will replace Sergio Pérez and will attempt to secure the final point needed to reach the 40 required for the FIA Super Licence, after a miscalculation was identified following the Mexican Grand Prix.

The Formula 1 calendar for the Brazilian Grand Prix kicks off on Friday, with three free practice sessions spread across Friday and Saturday, followed by qualifying on Saturday and the race on Sunday (8). The lights are due to go out at 14:00, Brasília time, marking Câmara’s debut, the rain risk, and the battle for runner-up as the main attractions of the round.
