A multi-car accident interrupted the opening main race of the 12th round of Formula 2, held on the street circuit in Baku, Azerbaijan. In a restart on lap 12 of the 29 scheduled for the race on this Friday (25), a spin by John Bennett of Trident triggered an incident that involved seven drivers, including Nikola Tsolov, a Campos Racing driver who had arrived in the Azerbaijani capital leading the championship.
After the race was restarted following Mari Boya’s car being removed from the track due to problems, Bennett hit the wall and Cian Shields also spun, being hit by Rafael Villagómez. The incident also involved Laurens van Hoepen, Ritomo Miyata, Joshua Durksen and Nikola Tsolov. The red flag was waved on the following lap to remove the cars from the track.
At the moment of the accident, the race leader was Oliver Goethe, driver for MP Motorsport. Alexander Dunne was second, followed by Colton Herta. Martinius Stenshorne and Dino Beganovic completed the top five. Rafael Câmara was sixth, and Emmo Fittipaldi was 13th. Of these, Goethe and Herta had not yet made the mandatory pit stop of the race.
In addition to Friday’s race, Formula 2 will wrap up its Azerbaijan stint on Saturday (26), when the second main race of the weekend will take the green flag, starting at 4:00.
