George Russell has been losing ground to his teammate Kimi Antonelli in the race for the 2026 Formula One title. According to some analysts, however, the Briton could still turn this tough situation into the fuel needed for another bid to win the championship next year.
Antonelli’s victory at Monza reinforced the shift in Mercedes’ dynamic. The Italian started from the back of the grid due to a penalty linked to an engine change, but fought his way to victory after a recovery that was regarded as a display of high-caliber performance.
That feat by the young Italian echoes Russell’s own trajectory within Mercedes. After overtaking Lewis Hamilton in his first full season alongside the seven-time world champion and finishing ahead of him in two of the three seasons they competed together, Russell came to be seen as the team’s future.
Now, Antonelli’s rapid rise has altered that dynamic. The Italian appears as a candidate for the youngest-ever title, while Russell finds himself in a situation that requires him to demonstrate once again his ability to compete directly with his teammate.
Russell also faced a few periods of bad luck throughout the season. The retirement in Canada is an instance, while in Zandvoort an internal team agreement had him finish behind Antonelli, despite winning the Sprint race and delivering a performance considered superior over that particular weekend.
Still, Baku and Singapore could be opportunities for Russell to respond. Last year in Baku, he finished second despite health issues, while in Singapore he grabbed the victory. Those results remind us that his abilities have not vanished.
If the championship gap grows too large, Russell could use the rest of the season to mount a fresh bid for the title next year. A similar scenario can be seen with Nico Rosberg, who after losing to Hamilton in 2015 ended that year with a streak of wins and clinched the championship the following season.
