Jack Doohan will have a fresh chance to showcase his potential in Formula 1 by testing with Haas in Jerez next week. The Australian will participate in a session that could be pivotal in determining one of the team’s seats for 2027.
Haas will conduct a two-day test with previous-year cars (TPC) on September 14 and 15, placing three drivers on track. In addition to Doohan, Ryo Hirakawa and Sho Tsuboi will also participate in the activity, both named by the Toyota Gazoo Racing driver development program.
Will be Doohan’s return to an F1 cockpit since his stint with Alpine, which ended after last year’s Miami Grand Prix. The Australian contested seven races for the Enstone team in 2025 before being replaced by Franco Colapinto, and now he will have the chance to impress Haas’ boss Ayao Komatsu.
The activity comes amid uncertainty about Haas’ second driver for 2027. If Komatsu decides not to retain Esteban Ocon, Doohan sits among the five names the team is considering to fill the seat.
Another name gaining traction in Haas’ tests is Brazilian Rafael Câmara. The Formula 3 champion recently took part in an activity with Haas in Portimão alongside Hirakawa and Leonardo Fornaroli, a McLaren reserve, and backstage reports indicate the Brazilian stood out in the test, becoming the leading candidate should Ocon not remain.
Hirakawa remains in contention as well. The Japanese driver is Haas’ other reserve, has already taken part in two TL1 sessions this season, and Toyota has shown interest in placing him on the F1 grid. Rumors involving Yuki Tsunoda are considered unfounded, and the Japanese driver would be out of Haas’ plans.
Despite these evaluations, Haas has shown no rush to decide. Komatsu recently stated that there is no urgency to define the future of the seat, while the driver market has cooled after some major announcements.
