Fernando Alonso could end his Formula One career after this season and return to the World Endurance Championship, WEC, in 2027. According to several reports, the Spaniard is considering a switch to the endurance category, where he has already delivered impressive results.
If the move materializes, it would mark Alonso’s second stint in the WEC. After departing Formula 1 at the end of 2018, he contested the 2018-2019 season with Toyota Gazoo Racing and clinched the title, in addition to winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans twice, in 2018 and 2019, alongside Sébastien Buemi and Kazuki Nakajima.
During that season, Alonso also won the Spa-Francorchamps 6 Hours on two occasions and took the triumph at the Sebring 1,000 Miles. At Fuji and Shanghai, he finished runner-up, being eclipsed by the other Toyota car. The only weekend when his team failed to reach the podium was at Silverstone, where they were disqualified.
The Spaniard also took part in the 24 Hours of Daytona at IMSA on two occasions. In 2018, he finished 38th, even sharing the car with Lando Norris. The following year, he returned to the event and claimed victory alongside Kamui Kobayashi, Jordan Taylor and Renger van der Zande, driving a Cadillac.
A potential return to the WEC could also keep Alonso connected with Aston Martin. The driver has stated in various interviews that he intends to continue working with the brand, which began competing in the WEC and IMSA in 2025 with the Aston Martin THOR Team.
In the WEC, the team’s best result to date has been fourth place in this year’s events at Spa and COTA. The No. 007 car has been scoring regularly, while the No. 009 managed to score points only once, at Interlagos. In IMSA, the No. 23 finished second in Atlanta last season, the team’s only podium in the category.
