Fernando Alonso has responded to Max Verstappen’s comments about the new Formula 1 cars. The Spanish two-time champion pointed out that he understands Verstappen’s opinion, particularly when it comes to the way they are driven.
The top category of motorsport has undergone a significant overhaul of its regulations for the 2026 season. The new cars are smaller and lighter, with a new aerodynamic package, a boost button, sustainable fuel, and engines that now divide their power between electric and internal combustion.
Regarding this, the Red Bull driver stated that he did not like the new cars, as they do not even seem like Formula 1 cars. Alonso acknowledged that having to pay attention to the battery and energy management is not the best way to drive the car.
“I understand Max’s comments because, as a driver, you want to make a difference in the curve, driving five kilometers per hour faster. But now you are dictated by the amount of energy your engine will have on the next straight,” he said.
“But, at the same time, this is F1, and it has always been like this. Now it’s about energy. Last year or two years ago, when he won all the races, it was about downforce. He could enter the curves at 280 km/h, and we could enter at 250 km/h because we didn’t have the downforce. In the end, in this F1, we close our visor and go racing,” he added.
