F1 Today: Ferrari Responds as FIA Eyes Changes

July 6, 2026

Monday in Formula 1 was marked by the reaction to Charles Leclerc’s victory at the British Grand Prix. The Monégasque triumphed at Silverstone, claimed his first win of the 2026 season, and gave Ferrari its 250th victory in the history of the sport.

The result reinforced the Italian team’s good form, as they won two of the last three races and left Silverstone with a double podium. Still, Frédéric Vasseur avoided putting Ferrari in title contention and stated that the focus now is on maintaining the evolution step by step, starting with the Belgian Grand Prix.

Mercedes was also at the center of the day’s news. The team decided not to appeal the five-second penalty imposed on Kimi Antonelli at the British Grand Prix, keeping the Italian out of the points zone. The trouble began with damage to the car late in the race, when Antonelli started to have trouble controlling the Mercedes.

Off the track, the 2026 calendar returned to being an important topic. Formula 1 progressed in talks to try to reinstate the Bahrain Grand Prix in the season, after the postponement of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabia rounds in March. The tentative window would be the weekend of October 2-4, ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix.

The FIA is also studying far-reaching changes for 2031. The body is evaluating simpler, lighter, and cheaper V8 engines, in addition to a system that could do away with the current model of customer teams powered by engines. The idea aims to cut costs and prevent suppliers from having influence over teams powered by their power units.
