Nikola Tsolov already has his first test scheduled with a Formula 1 car. Peter Bayer, CEO of Racing Bulls, confirmed that the driver will participate in a test with previous-generation cars this week at Imola, Italy.
The Bulgarian, currently leading the 2026 season, will drive the 2025 VCARB 02 on Thursday, August 27, at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix venue — the circuit has not been part of the F1 calendar since last year.

Tsolov has been part of Red Bull’s Academy since the last season, but previously he was part of Alpine’s junior driver program, and now he is eyeing a promotion to the F1 grid with Racing Bulls.
And even though he is in the running for the seat, Liam Lawson and Arvid Lindblad are also in the mix and, with three names for two seats, Alan Permane and Bayer say it’s a good problem to handle. “No, because… both Arvid and Liam are doing a fantastic job; Liam currently sits ninth in the drivers’ standings and has shown excellent pace, both in qualifying and in races,” Bayer said.
Permane had previously stated that he is the “next in line” and is on Racing Bulls’ radar for the decision, noting, however, that the choice will be made later in the season. “The same goes for Nikola, who is doing a really excellent job in Formula 2. In fact, we will put him on track next week for a test with older-generation cars (TPC) in Imola, just to continue assisting in his preparation,” Bayer continued.
“But, in the end, the decision on the two drivers for next year rests with Alan, and he will do what’s best for the team,” he concluded.
