F1: Mekies Flags ‘Great Risk’ to Red Bull After ADUO’s Decision

July 1, 2026

The decision to block further updates to Red Bull’s power unit based on the ADUO system (Additional Development and Update Opportunities, as abbreviated in English) during this Formula 1 season has stirred concern within the team. The team’s principal, Laurent Mekies, stated that the measure could have a significant impact both this season and the next.

The restriction was imposed after the FIA (Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile) concluded, using data from the early stages of the year, that Red Bull has the strongest engine on the grid. The ADUO framework was introduced this season to prevent a single manufacturer from maintaining a prolonged advantage after the introduction of new regulations.

The decision surprised Red Bull. Since then, the FIA has begun a review of its conclusion, although reports indicate that no changes have been made so far. Mekies also expressed concern that the ADUO considers only the internal combustion engine of the power unit, which could allow other manufacturers to continue evolving the remaining components.

“You’re right. There is a significant risk for Red Bull there, so you’re completely right to highlight that risk. This is one of the reasons why it’s vital for Red Bull, and more broadly for the sport, that we get this framework right. And again, we’re grateful to the FIA for taking the time to publish its conclusion. And yes, you would always want to reach a conclusion sooner, but it’s more important that we reach the correct conclusion, even if it takes a little longer.”

The executive also revealed that the squad remains in contact with the FIA to try to clarify the situation. “We have maintained very constructive discussions with the FIA since then,” he said. “They are conducting a review, we are exchanging as much data as possible to ensure they have the correct and complete picture, because, as you said, not only do we have a different view on this outcome, but it also has major implications for this year and for the next.

“Therefore, it is important, above all for the sport, that we get this right, and obviously for Red Bull Racing, the impact of being on one side or the other of the fence will be large.”
