F1: Croft Claims 2025 Was Hamilton’s Worst Year, But Rules Out Retirement Possibility

December 15, 2025

The 2025 Formula 1 season was the most difficult of Lewis Hamilton’s career, according to commentator David Croft, the lead voice of Sky Sports broadcasts. After 19 years in the category, the British driver ended the championship living an unprecedented scenario, marked by below-expected results, early eliminations in qualifying, and constant questions about his performance.

Hamilton, who competed in his first full year with Ferrari, ended 2025 facing a negative sequence that included four eliminations still in Q1 in the final stages of the championship. In Las Vegas, the seven-time champion was the last placed in qualifying, starting only in 20th, a clear picture of the difficulties faced throughout the year. For Croft, the situation was especially heavy from a psychological point of view.

“This must be extremely demoralizing, especially for a seven-time world champion, to have to answer all the time why he’s so slow and why everything is going wrong,” the commentator stated in an interview. Croft highlighted that Hamilton has always been recognized for his ability to fight and react in difficult moments, reinforcing that, for him, the British driver remains the greatest driver in history, both on and off the track.

The commentator also revealed that he had a private conversation with Hamilton during the Las Vegas weekend, when the atmosphere around the driver was already one of great pressure. Without going into details about the content of the conversation, Croft suggested that the problem may have been more about confidence than technical ability. “He needs to believe and remember that he is still Lewis Hamilton and that he hasn’t lost that skill,” he commented, giving the impression that the mental state played a significant role in such a complicated year.

Despite interpretations in the paddock pointing to possible signs of pre-retirement in some of the driver’s recent statements, Croft was categorical in ruling out any chance of immediate departure from Formula 1. According to him, Hamilton has already made it clear that he will be on the grid in 2026. “Lewis will return. He won’t retire, he won’t step back. He will be on the grid in 2026 and, knowing him as I do, he should return revitalized and with a lot of desire after a period away from the tracks,” he guaranteed.

Still, the commentator issued a direct warning to the seven-time champion. For Croft, Hamilton cannot allow the next championship to start in the same way that 2025 ended, under penalty of facing even more intense questioning. “He can’t afford to start the season the way he ended this one. Otherwise, the questions will increase more and more,” he concluded.
