Theo Pourchaire looks set to exit Peugeot’s FIA World Endurance Championship lineup to focus on his new Formula E commitments for sister marque Opel next season.
Formula 2 champion and ex-IndyCar Series driver Pourchaire became the first official signing for Opel’s new Formula E team on Tuesday, having already been part of the broader Stellantis family via his work for Peugeot in the WEC since last year.
The Frenchman will prioritize the all-electric series, which features a single clash with the 2027 WEC schedule between the 6 Hours of Sao Paulo and the Shanghai E-Prix in July.
That follows the rescheduling of the Monaco E-Prix, also confirmed on Tuesday, which had been set to clash with the WEC’s Spa round in May.
An Opel spokesperson confirmed to Sportscar365 that Pourchaire is scheduled to be present for all Formula E rounds in 2026-27.
This presents an issue for Peugeot, which requires at least four of the six drivers on its WEC roster to not be active in Formula E to contest the Interlagos round.
Team principal Emmanuel Esnault previously expressed a preference for “consistency” in the marque’s driver lineup instead of bringing in one-off replacements.
However, Pourchaire’s new Opel commitments are not expected to prevent him from seeing out the current WEC season with Peugeot.
Contacted for comment by Sportscar365 about Pourchaire’s status in the WEC, a Peugeot Sport spokesperson said: “Theo remains fully committed to the [current] WEC season and delivering results with the team.”
“It’s great to see him being recognized as a promising talent and being given opportunities to gain valuable track time in other international championships.”
“Having come through the Young Driver Program, he has been able to discover different motorsport programs across the Stellantis family.”
“This kind of parallel top-level program is quite common in modern motorsport and ultimately helps strengthen Theo as a driver by broadening his experience and deepening his technical understanding.”
Ex-Ferrari Driver Shwartzman Emerges as Peugeot Contender
One name that has emerged in recent weeks as a strong contender to fill the gap in Peugeot’s roster that is set to be left by Pourchaire’s likely departure is former Ferrari factory driver and Indianapolis 500 pole-winner Robert Shwartzman.
With Stoffel Vandoorne and Malthe Jakobsen both set to depart Peugeot, as previously reported by Sportscar365, it would leave the team with only two drivers, Paul di Resta and Loic Duval, on its books as drivers with no Formula E involvement.
Even if it elects to promote Alex Quinn from his current reserve role, it would still need one more driver that is not prioritizing Formula E to join di Resta, Duval, Nick Cassidy and likely WEC returnee Jean-Eric Vergne in its six-driver stable.
Cassidy and Vergne were both confirmed by Citroen Racing, also part of the Stellantis group, for the 2026-27 Formula E season last week.
Shwartzman is no stranger to Hypercar competition, having been part of the driver lineup for the satellite No. 83 AF Corse Ferrari 499P entry in 2024 before departing the Italian manufacturer to pursue an opportunity in IndyCar with Prema Racing.
However, Prema’s subsequent change in ownership and resulting withdrawal from IndyCar left Shwartzman on the sidelines for the current season.
Shwartzman has pre-existing links to Stellantis through multiple Formula E test appearances for the DS Penske team.
