The Azerbaijan Grand Prix schedule is set for a major upheaval, as Formula 2 has announced it will bring even more action to the streets of Baku.
The weekend’s timetable had already been moved forward by a day, with the Formula 1 Grand Prix scheduled to take place on Saturday, September 26, instead of Sunday the 27th, and to avoid Azerbaijan’s Day of Remembrance, a national day of mourning to honor soldiers killed in the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War.
Now, the F2 has also adjusted its plans for the Baku Grand Prix by expanding the 12th round to include an extra qualifying session, as well as adding another race.
Due to the revised calendar, Thursday’s on-track action will begin with a 45-minute free practice followed by two consecutive 20-minute qualifying sessions. On Friday morning, the Sprint will have its grid set from the first qualifying session, as will the later race on the same day.
On Saturday morning, the second race will have its grid determined by the results of the second qualifying session held in Azerbaijan.
In a statement, Bruno Michel, the CEO of F2, said that “as Formula 2 is the only support category at the Azerbaijan Formula 1 Grand Prix, we decided, together with the promoters, to stage an expanded F2 race weekend, featuring a free practice, two qualifying sessions, a Sprint race, and two main races.”
“This is the only weekend in which the schedule allows these additional sessions, which will further raise the level of entertainment for those in attendance and for all of our fans. The city circuit in Baku always delivers incredible races; therefore, we are very pleased to make the 12th round of our season something truly unique.”
“We will then return to our usual race-weekend format for the final two rounds of the 2026 season, which will take place in Doha and Yas Marina,” he concluded.
