F1: Sainz Reacts to Horner’s Revelation About His Return to Red Bull

October 19, 2026

Carlos Sainz commented briefly on Christian Horner’s revelation that he had been considered to return to Red Bull for the 2026 Formula 1 season. The Spaniard avoided delving into the topic when questioned about the discussions held before the departure of the team’s then-chief.

In his book Drive, Horner stated that he discussed with Sainz the possibility of pairing him with Max Verstappen. The Briton saw in the Williams driver a blend of experience and commitment that could be useful to Red Bull. “He was an experienced Grand Prix driver, a team player, and I knew he would work tirelessly for the team,” he wrote.

According to Horner, the conversations took place shortly before his departure from Red Bull in July 2025. The exit halted any progress on the possibility, and Sainz remained with Williams. When questioned by the Spanish program El Chiringuito about the account, the driver replied: “Yes, he said I was at his house having dinner. It is what it is.”

Horner also revealed that Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc were considered as alternatives to replace Sergio Perez. Alonso had shown direct interest in the vacancy, but Helmut Marko indicated that Verstappen’s management was against the change.

Leclerc also joined Horner’s list, who admired not only his speed and qualifying performance but also his public stance toward Ferrari. The former Red Bull chief believed that this loyalty and the Monégasque’s profile could fit well with the team, especially given the difficulties faced by Perez.
