F1: Hulkenberg Mocks Rumors About Sainz Joining Audi

July 17, 2026

Rumors about the driver market in Formula 1 remain strong ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix. This time, Nico Hulkenberg responded with good humor to the speculation that Carlos Sainz could be his replacement at the Audi team.

The rumors gained momentum after a difficult start to the season for both Williams and Audi. While Sainz is facing challenges in his first season with the British outfit, Hulkenberg is also having a tough start in the German manufacturer’s project.

During press activities in Spa-Francorchamps, the German was questioned about his future and made clear that he saw no reason for concern. According to him, Audi is satisfied with its two-driver lineup, formed by him and Gabriel Bortoleto.

“This is just the typical summer noise in F1. In fact, I know the team is very happy with Gabi (Bortoleto) and me,” Hulkenberg said in an interview with GPblog. The driver also highlighted that the Audi project is in its first year and that the existing contracts are quite clear.

Not missing the chance to joke about the situation, Hulkenberg made a light-hearted suggestion regarding the Spaniard: “I have read some of the rumors about Carlos, but I think the reserve driver seat is available, although I doubt he would be interested in it. From my side, there is no question mark,” the German stated.

Sainz, for his part, has also been a constant target of speculation in recent weeks. Despite rumors about a possible Williams departure, the Spaniard has repeatedly publicly stated that his priority is to contribute to the British team’s progress.

In statements previously made in Austria, the Spanish driver revealed that he asked his representatives to avoid presenting proposals until the August break: “Honestly, I’m not thinking about it because I have a lot of work to do here at Williams. In the coming races, we will have many simulator sessions and numerous meetings, as has happened in recent months,” he added.

The Spaniard also reaffirmed his commitment to the Williams project: “I also asked my management team to give me a little peace until the holidays, so I can help Williams and improve the situation as much as possible. After that, it will be the time to think about it and evaluate the options. The team knows my intentions and priorities, which are to stay in this project. I believe in the long-term vision, and now we have a lot of work to do,” he concluded.
