Gabriel Bortoleto acknowledged that he delivered more than expected in the Azerbaijan Formula 1 Grand Prix. After Sunday’s (21) race, the competitor pointed out that the real position of Sauber was a bit further back.
The weekend was not one of the easiest for the Swiss team. In qualifying, Nico Hülkenberg failed to advance beyond Q1, and the Brazilian managed to reach Q2 but only secured 13th place on the starting grid.
In the race in Baku, Oscar Piastri crashed and abandoned on the first lap, becoming one less opponent on the track. Additionally, Alexander Albon had problems and ultimately received a 10-second penalty for making contact with Franco Colapinto.
When asked if he was satisfied with delivering what was possible on the street circuit, Bortoleto stated that he did even more than expected, as he believed the Sauber’s pace was more towards the middle of the pack – the driver finished 11th.
“Even more, I would say. We ended up ahead of a Williams, a McLaren broke down, so I think our real position was around 15th, 14th. Over the weekend, it wasn’t clear that we would be in the position we achieved. So, I think that’s positive already,” he said.
