Ferrari has entered a new era and has already sparked a sharp divide within the world of motorsport. The unveiling of the Ferrari Luce, the Italian brand’s first production model that is fully electric, drew strong criticism from well-known figures historically tied to the company, including those connected to Formula 1.
Officially unveiled in Rome on the 25th of May, the car abandons the brand’s traditional two-seater sports car concept. The new model is an electric grand tourer with four or five doors, equipped with an unprecedented 880V platform and four electric motors delivering over 1,000 hp, performance on par with the world’s fastest hypercars.
The project also drew attention for its futuristic design and the interior crafted in collaboration with LoveFrom, the studio of Jony Ive. Despite the technological advances highlighted by the Maranello-based brand, the car received negative reactions from purists and former executives of the company. Luca di Montezemolo, former Ferrari president and former head of F1, harshly criticized the new concept.
“If I told you what I truly think, I would say things that are very unpleasant, so I prefer not to comment. I only hope someone removes the Cavallino Rampante from that car. There’s a risk of destroying a myth, and that saddens me deeply,” he stated.
Flavio Briatore also mocked the Italian manufacturer’s electric model. “Everyone keeps asking me if I’ve seen the Ferrari Luce. There’s a big advantage: in my opinion, this time the Chinese won’t copy it,” the businessman said, a remark later echoed by Montezemolo.
The reaction from the financial market was also cautious, with Ferrari’s shares dipping after the launch. Nevertheless, the current head of the brand, John Elkann, treated the Luce as a historic milestone. “With the Ferrari Luce, we are redefining what is possible once again. We aren’t merely unveiling a new car; we are opening a chapter that turns our vision into reality,” he declared.
