F1: Wolff Downplays Mercedes’ Expectations After Dominance in Italy

September 10, 2026

Mercedes arrives in Madrid after a perfect weekend in Monza, but Toto Wolff has already moved to lower expectations for the next round of Formula 1. The team principal believes the Spanish circuit’s characteristics will be quite different from those found in Italy.

The result in Monza was Mercedes’ first weekend with maximum points since the Chinese Grand Prix, when Kimi Antonelli claimed his first victory. In Italy, the Italian won for the seventh time in his career after starting from 19th on the grid, while George Russell finished P2, delivering a 1-2 for the team.

For Wolff, however, there is no reason to expect another dominant showing: “This next weekend presents a completely different challenge,” the Austrian said, pointing out that the Madrid track has characteristics closer to Budapest and Zandvoort.

The expectation, therefore, is for a much tighter battle, with other teams once again capable of contending for the top spots. Wolff assessed that the Mercedes’ main task will be to quickly grasp the demands of the new circuit and extract the maximum from the car from the very first free-practice session.

“We are expecting a very competitive weekend,” added Wolff. The executive also commented that the debut on a new circuit brings a combination of opportunities and uncertainties, making it difficult to forecast in advance the level of competitiveness of each team.

Despite caution regarding sporting performance, Wolff celebrated Madrid’s addition to the calendar. For him, the presence of the Spanish capital represents another sign of the sport’s growth, especially given the recent expansion to new street circuits, such as Miami, Las Vegas, and Jeddah.

“Madrid is a global city and racing there is another significant step for our sport,” concluded Wolff, emphasizing that the interest of a city considered iconic to host the category demonstrates the strength and momentum of F1’s expansion.
