Tuesday featured significant movements both on and off the Formula 1 tracks. Rafael Câmara entered a pivotal phase in the race for a Haas seat in 2027, Fernando Alonso surfaced as potentially staying with Aston Martin, and Mercedes admitted difficulties in keeping up with the pace of updates from rivals.
The standout Brazilian once again centered on Rafa Câmara. Haas rented the Portimão circuit for a sequence of tests with older-generation cars from Wednesday through Friday, with Câmara sharing duties alongside Leonardo Fornaroli and Ryo Hirakawa. Fred Vasseur stressed that Ferrari is pouring substantial resources into Câmara’s development and said that, in collaboration with Haas, they are working to identify the best path to place him in Formula 1 next year.
Another significant development emerged around Alonso. According to GPblog, the Spaniard had already decided to remain with Aston Martin in 2027, though neither side has officially confirmed the renewal. The expectation is that an announcement could come during the Spanish Grand Prix weekend in Madrid, while internally there is confidence in the potential of the project led by Adrian Newey and Honda.
In the fight for the championship, Lando Norris adopted a cautious stance even after winning the last two races. The current champion stated that McLaren still does not have a car fully capable of mounting a consistent title challenge, mainly due to weaknesses in low-speed corners. Norris sits fourth in the standings, with 159 points, 83 behind the leader Kimi Antonelli.
The Mercedes team also acknowledged that the situation has become tougher. Toto Wolff admitted that the squad currently does not have the same resources to introduce updates as some rivals, after concentrating investment in building the car at the start of the year. According to the executive, each new package can bring a few tenths of performance, precisely as McLaren and Ferrari work to reduce the advantage built by the German outfit.
At Red Bull, Isack Hadjar’s recovery still leaves the lineup for the Italian Grand Prix open. Liam Lawson will stay with the team until the trip to Monza and could again substitute for the Frenchman if he is not fully recovered from the wrist fracture. Hadjar, however, has already shown improvement and expressed optimism about the possibility of returning.
The post-Dutch Grand Prix also continued to yield consequences. Lewis Hamilton took responsibility for the radio complaints targeting Ferrari’s strategy and acknowledged that “this isn’t my best version.” Nico Hülkenberg, meanwhile, earned praise from Audi for his reaction that prevented a collision with Gabriel Bortoleto following the Brazilian’s run at Zandvoort.
Lastly, attention returned to the calendar. Formula 1 continues to evaluate options to ensure the season’s completion amid the Middle East situation, while aiming for a calendar with at least 22 races. One of the discussed possibilities involves changes to the season’s final events.
