F1 Today: Verstappen Signs New Deal, Rafa Câmara on Haas Radar

August 20, 2026

Max Verstappen closed on Thursday one of the Formula 1 market’s main sagas by renewing his contract with Red Bull through 2030. The day also featured Rafael Câmara gaining momentum in the battle for a Haas seat, Gabriel Bortoleto outlining plans for the Dutch Grand Prix, and an important update from Honda for Zandvoort.

The staying of Verstappen was confirmed on the eve of the Dutch stage, after months of speculation about a possible departure. The four-time world champion said he is “very satisfied” with the new agreement and reiterated that his goal remains to bring Red Bull back to the top. Laurent Mekies highlighted the trust built between driver and team over the years.

Among Brazilians, Rafa Câmara had one of the day’s most significant moves. The driver will participate next week in a Haas test with old cars in Portimão, alongside Ryo Hirakawa and Leonardo Fornaroli. The three are seen as candidates for Esteban Ocon’s seat, and Ayao Komatsu made clear the activity would have an evaluative nature. Câmara, third in Formula 2, had already been singled out by Lawrence Barretto as the favorite for the seat.

Gabriel Bortoleto was also center stage in Zandvoort. The Brazilian celebrated Verstappen’s renewal, describing the Dutchman’s stay as “great for the sport,” and stated that the presence of a four-time champion contributes to the spectacle of the category. On another front, the Audi driver assessed that possible rain in the Dutch GP could help the team find answers about the car.

The championship lead also faced a snag in the coming weeks. Kimi Antonelli will receive a grid penalty at the Italian GP due to an engine change, while Mercedes attempts to respond after seeing its advantage shrink. At the same time, Honda delivered a major upgrade to its power unit for Zandvoort in search of more performance.

At Ferrari, Charles Leclerc pointed precisely to power as the main weakness of the SF-26 compared to Mercedes and Red Bull power units. The Monégasque, however, showed confidence in the team’s development program and highlighted Ferrari’s aggressive update approach during the first half of the season.

The day also saw Fernando Alonso leaving his future options open, Yuki Tsunoda revealing he was at the beach when he learned he would compete in the Dutch GP, and Lewis Hamilton showing extra motivation to try to win at Zandvoort. The Formula 1 season officially returns to the track this Friday, with the start of the schedule for the 12th round of the season.
