F1 Today: Hadjar Out, Tsunoda Returns, Sainz Renews Contract

August 19, 2026

Wednesday was a busy day in Formula 1 on the eve of the Dutch Grand Prix. Isack Hadjar was ruled out at the last minute by Red Bull, Liam Lawson was called up to replace him, and Yuki Tsunoda earned an unexpected opportunity to return to the grid, while Carlos Sainz ended speculation about his future by renewing with Williams.

Hadjar suffered a wrist injury during the summer break and will not be able to race in Zandvoort. Red Bull placed Lawson in the RB22, which opened a vacancy in the Racing Bulls. Consequently, Tsunoda temporarily relinquishes his role as reserve and will race this weekend alongside Arvid Lindblad. The change reshuffles the two teams right as the season resumes.

Another important move happened at Williams. The team announced a multi-year contract with Sainz, securing the Spaniard’s stay after also confirming Alexander Albon for 2027. Sainz stated that he believes in the people, the investments, and the work being done behind the scenes, while James Vowles emphasized his contribution both on and off the track and described the pairing with Albon as one of the strongest on the grid.
