F1: Lawson Reveals Change of Plans for His Future in the Sport

August 17, 2026

Liam Lawson changed the way he views his future in Formula 1, after a brief spell with Red Bull Racing at the start of 2025. The New Zealander still aims to move forward and win in the sport, but he no longer ties that goal exclusively to Max Verstappen’s team.

The shift in mindset occurred after Lawson was promoted from Racing Bulls to Red Bull in 2025 and stayed only the first two races alongside Verstappen, before returning to his former team in a swap with Yuki Tsunoda. Since then, the driver has broadened his perspective on the routes that could take him to the pinnacle.

When he joined Red Bull’s young driver program, Lawson had a fairly clear goal: “I think my mindset used to be, obviously, very specific, to reach the Red Bull ‘family’ and try to make it to the main team,” the 24-year-old told PlanetF1.

The promotion to Red Bull Racing represented exactly the path Lawson had pursued since adolescence, moving through the development categories with Red Bull’s support, until earning a seat in the main team. The experience, however, lasted only two races and altered his view of the future.

“But I think now, honestly, it’s not about being specific. Like everyone, I’m working to be at the front and to win in Formula 1, and where that will be, I have no idea. And I’m not too worried about it, but that’s what I’m working toward,” he added.
