The FIA closed the investigation into Oscar Piastri without punishment following the Austrian Formula 1 Grand Prix. The McLaren driver had been summoned by the stewards for allegedly driving too slowly on the reconnaissance laps before the race.
Piastri was being investigated for a possible violation of Article 12.2.1.i of the International Sporting Code and for potential non-compliance with the race director’s notes. The Australian was summoned to appear before the stewards at 17:10 local time to present his version.
After hearing the driver and a representative of McLaren, as well as reviewing video footage, timing data and onboard cameras, the stewards concluded that Piastri was within the required delta time during the reconnaissance laps. Consequently, no further action was taken.
“The stewards heard the driver of car 81, Oscar Piastri, the team representative, and reviewed videos, timing data and onboard images of the car. After analyzing the footage, it became evident that the car was well within the specified delta time. Therefore, the stewards took no further action,” the decision stated.
On the track, Piastri finished the Austrian GP in fourth place, ahead of his teammate, Lando Norris. Yet the weekend was below expectations for McLaren, which did not contend for the podium as Mercedes and Red Bull fought for the win.
