The Formula 1 season this weekend features the Austrian Grand Prix, a 2026 event, and for the second time it will be held in the middle of a FIFA World Cup. The premier championship of world motorsport is set to clash with the planet’s most important football competition for the second time. F1MANIA.NET has taken a close look at which drivers have the most wins in this World Cup overlap period.

Counting the Barcelona Grand Prix, held two weeks ago, there have been 39 F1 races conducted amid World Cups of football. By the end of this year’s World Cup there will be 42 races. Currently, the driver with the most wins in this timeframe is Michael Schumacher, with five victories.
The German, however, could be overtaken in the upcoming races by Lewis Hamilton. Hamilton’s triumph in Barcelona marked his fourth win in this overlap, establishing him as the most successful driver in this curious statistic. And, as besides the Austrian GP, the events in England and Belgium will also be held during the World Cup, the Ferrari driver could surpass Schumacher.
A number of drivers appear in the sequence with two wins, including active names such as Max Verstappen and Fernando Alonso, world champions such as Ayrton Senna, Sebastian Vettel, Alain Prost, Niki Lauda, Jack Brabham and Juan Manuel Fangio. Other drivers have only one victory in World Cup GPs, such as Nelson Piquet and Rubens Barrichello.
