Jeep Renegade Sahara MHEV 2027: How the Refreshed SUV Takes on Chinese Automakers

September 29, 2026

The Jeep Renegade arrived on the Brazilian market in 2015 with the mission of finally placing Jeep in the ring of compact SUVs. But a decade later, the landscape is quite different. The segment has grown, gained new competitors, and, especially in recent years, has been flooded with Chinese models that are increasingly technological and electrified.

In this context emerges the Jeep Renegade Sahara MHEV 2027, an important update for the Goiana-built SUV in Pernambuco. Over the course of a week, I drove 562 kilometers with the model, passing through São Paulo and towns in the interior of the state, under different usage conditions. The route included highways, urban traffic, and even stretches in the rain, allowing observation of the Renegade’s behavior in a variety of situations.

The main mechanical novelty is precisely the electrification. The Sahara version now uses the Stellantis 48-volt MHEV system, paired with the familiar 1.3 turbo flex engine. The assembly delivers 176 hp and 27.5 kgfm of torque, while the electric system includes a machine rated at 11.4 kW and 65 Nm. The transmission remains a six-speed automatic and the traction is front-wheel drive. Our overall average with gasoline was 12.5 km/l, and we nearly used up almost a full tank of fuel.

MHEV: electrification without changing the personality

In practice, the mild-hybrid system does not transform the Renegade into an SUV that runs for long stretches on electricity alone. The aim is different: the 48V system assists the combustion engine in specific situations, recovers energy during decelerations, and helps make launches and re-acceleration smoother.

During evaluation, this characteristic mainly appears in the way the car responds in urban use. The package conveys a sense of greater smoothness in launches and transitions between acceleration and deceleration. If needed, the driver can switch to Sport mode.

It is a discreet electrification, indeed. There is no experience of driving a full hybrid or plug-in, but there is an evolution compared to a purely combustion SUV. And that seems to be Jeep’s intent: to incorporate electrification without giving up a well-known powertrain and without requiring the driver to change behavior.

Another positive point is that the Renegade continues to offer a flex-fuel engine, something that still makes a difference for Brazilian consumers and broadens fueling options. In contrast, the model no longer offers diesel versions.

The biggest transformation is inside the cabin

If the MHEV system represents the main mechanical novelty, it is inside the cabin where the Renegade’s update becomes most evident.

The cabin has been redesigned to bring the SUV closer to its larger-sister models from the brand. The new 10.1-inch infotainment screen, for example, follows the styling used in the Compass and the Commander. In the Sahara, the system also includes Adventure Intelligence and integrated Alexa, in addition to wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity.

The change makes a difference in daily use. The larger screen and the new arrangement of controls make the cockpit look more up-to-date and reduce the sense that the Renegade’s interior design was several years behind its rivals.

The digital instrument cluster also contributes to this perception. The combination of changes, together with the new central console, the new gear selector, and the rear-seat air vents, makes the driver feel in front of a more modern Renegade.

There’s an interesting strategy in this update: Jeep did not try to turn the Renegade into another car. The exterior design remains recognizable, preserving the traditional seven grille slots and the boxier shapes that have become a signature of the model.

This matters because many of the new SUVs arriving in Brazil, especially the Chinese ones, rely on more fluid styling, enormous screens, and a more futuristic aesthetic. The Renegade takes a different path. What perhaps could be reconsidered is the material used on the dashboard, which has lost the soft touch, while the seats have an aesthetically appealing material that may reduce the refinement a notch.

Behind the wheel, a SUV that continues to feel rugged

Throughout the evaluation week, one of the standout traits is the sense of solidity the Renegade conveys.

On highways the SUV maintains a steady drive and conveys a sense of safety to the driver. In urban environments, its relatively compact dimensions aid in maneuvers and in São Paulo’s heavier traffic.

The suspension also preserves the model’s traditional trait: a commitment to robustness. The Renegade does not try to deliver sporty handling, but it inspires confidence when dealing with uneven surfaces and different road textures.

The experience on wet stretches also showed predictable behavior. In rain, driving naturally demands more attention, but the package gives a sense of being well planted on the road.

It’s precisely in this kind of situation that the Renegade reminds the driver that its aim was never to be merely another urban SUV. Even in the Sahara version, which features front-wheel drive, there is a project heritage tied to the Jeep philosophy.

The challenge now comes from China

Perhaps the most intriguing issue involving the Renegade 2027 isn’t so much about the car itself but the market in which it sits.

When the Renegade was launched, competition in compact SUVs was dominated by traditional manufacturers. Today, the reality is different. BYD, GWM, Caoa Chery, Omoda Jaecoo, Geely, and other brands have rapidly expanded their presence in Brazil, bringing new electrification options, technology, and equipment to consumers.

An example of the speed of this transformation can be seen in the midsize-SUV segment. In August 2026, seven of the ten best-selling models in the category were from Chinese brands, and the GWM Haval H6 led the monthly rankings, ahead of the Jeep Compass.

Although the Renegade sits in a different segment, the trend matters because it shifts consumer expectations. The SUV buyer today looks beyond engine, space, and finish; they also want larger screens, connectivity, driver-assistance systems, and increasingly, some level of electrification.

In this regard, the Renegade’s update is practically a direct response to this transformation.

Is there still room for the Renegade?

The answer lies less in trying to compete with the Chinese in every aspect and more in preserving what made the model arrive here in the first place.

The Renegade has a very strong identity, a solid market position, an expansive dealership network, a sales track record, and an image built over more than ten years in Brazil.

At the same time, it’s hard to ignore that competition has changed. There are SUVs offering large screens, more sophisticated hybrid systems, and extensive equipment packages at increasingly aggressive price points. The market has also begun demanding quicker responses from traditional manufacturers.

The Renegade Sahara 2027, therefore, is not a revolution. It is a carefully directed evolution aimed at keeping the SUV competitive.

The adoption of the 48V MHEV adds electrification to the whole package. The new central multimedia system and the instrument panel bring the cabin closer to the Compass experience. And maintaining the distinctive design preserves the identity that helped the model become well known in Brazil.

In the Sahara version, the package also includes a power-adjustable driver’s seat, a panoramic sunroof, 18-inch wheels, six airbags, autonomous emergency braking, and other safety and comfort equipment. The announced price for the configuration was R$ 175,990.

After our test drive, the impression is that the Renegade has found a way to refresh its most criticized points without giving up its personality.

In a market where many competitors try to win customers with the wow effect of technology and electrification, Jeep bets on a different formula: modernize what needed modernization and preserve what made the Renegade recognizable.

It’s a strategy that shows that, even in the face of the strong transformation driven by Chinese brands, there is still room for a traditional SUV — provided it is willing to evolve.
