The FIA paid tribute to Zdeněk Chovanec following the death of the former Formula 3 driver at the age of 21. The news stirred the motorsport world, with the sport’s governing body expressing its solidarity with the family and friends of the competitor.
Zdeněk Chovanec competed in Formula 3 during the 2021 and 2022 seasons. The former driver of Czech, Portuguese, and Venezuelan nationalities built his career through the junior categories of international motorsport before his career was prematurely interrupted.
In a post on social media, the FIA lamented the loss of the driver: “The FIA is deeply saddened by the passing of Zdeněk Chovanec, who competed in the FIA Formula 3 Championship in 2021 and 2022. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go out to Zdeněk’s family and friends,” the organization stated in its post.
Chovanec’s single-seater career began in 2020. That year, he competed in the United Arab Emirates Formula 4 with Xcel Motorsport, finishing seventh in the standings with 88 points and securing two podiums in 19 races. He also took part in Italian F4 with Bhaitech, finishing 17th after tallying 18 points from 14 races.
In 2021, the driver stepped up to higher categories, splitting time between the Euroformula Open, FIA Formula 3, and Asian F3. Driving for Double R Racing, he collected 33 points in the Euroformula Open and finished the season in 15th place.

That same year, he contested eight races in Formula 3 with Charouz Racing System, failing to score points. He also took part in two rounds of Asian F3 with BlackArts Racing, accumulating two points and finishing the championship in 18th place.
Chovanec returned to Formula 3 in 2022, again with Charouz, for four more races, but he never had the chance to attempt reaching Formula 1. Outside F3, he enjoyed his best moment in the BOSS GP Series Formula Class, where he achieved five wins, five pole positions, and six podiums in six races. His last appearance in single-seaters came in 2023, in the Ultimate Cup Series Proto P3, closing a brief but impactful career in motorsport.
