F1: Toto Wolff Names George Russell as Mercedes’ Top Driver for 2024

Wolff Continues to Praise George Russell’s Progress, Especially Regarding His Development in Formula 1

Toto Wolff has once again expressed high praise for George Russell, highlighting the impressive growth and evolution of the British driver within Formula 1. The Mercedes team principal noted how significantly Russell has developed over recent years and went as far as to suggest that in 2024, he has surpassed Lewis Hamilton as the team’s strongest driver.

Since joining the German outfit in 2022, Russell has made remarkable strides. That year marked a milestone as he achieved his first victory at the São Paulo Grand Prix at Interlagos. Over the four seasons he has shared team garages with the seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, Russell finished ahead in two seasons — notably in 2022, and again in 2024. This is particularly noteworthy considering the ongoing speculation that Hamilton would move to Ferrari after his tenure with Mercedes.

In a recent social media video titled “Mid-Season Report,” the Austrian team boss discussed Russell’s development, using 2024 as an example and emphasizing how the driver has now become Mercedes’ leading contender.

“Looking at George, I see how much he has progressed since he entered Formula 1 — from the quick Williams driver to now being part of Mercedes, clearly alongside one of the greatest drivers of all time, Lewis Hamilton,” Wolff explained. “And as you all saw last year, he started to become so consistent in his pure pace — in terms of results, he is now the strongest driver.”

“Kicking off 2024, with Lewis moving to Ferrari, George naturally took on the role of senior driver. He has embraced this position effortlessly and continues to deliver. Even when the car isn’t at its best, he manages to outperform it. You can always count on George to perform,” Wolff continued. “Beyond just his driving skills, he is excellent with our partners, engaging in numerous activities that help build his personal brand as well as ours. Honestly, we couldn’t ask for a better number one driver,” he added.
