F1: Domenicali Reveals Two Scenarios for the Next Regulatory Cycle

July 31, 2026

The CEO of Formula 1, Stefano Domenicali, stated that the sport is already discussing the direction of the next technical regulation cycle and revealed that there are two possibilities being analyzed for the category’s future.

Formula 1 began competing this season under a new technical regulation intended to last five years. The main change occurred in the power units, which initially delivered power in a balanced split between the internal combustion engine and the electrical system, followed by a gradual reduction of the electrical share over the next two seasons.

Speaking to international press, including GPblog, Domenicali explained that the first option is to keep the current regulation until the end of the planned cycle, in 2031. At the end of that period, the FIA would have the freedom to present a completely new set of technical rules.

“There are two options. If we wait for the end of the cycle, in 2031, nothing prevents the FIA from presenting a totally different regulation. And, of course, if the teams want to be part of that, they can participate; otherwise, not. I’m exaggerating a bit, but you understand the principle,” he said.

The second possibility would be to move changes to the regulation forward before 2031, provided there is consensus among all involved parties.

“If there is consensus to advance this, it will be necessary to establish the proper governance structure. The teams, together with the manufacturers, will need to reach an agreement. This is another possibility that I believe will be on the table among all of us before the end of the season,” he explained.

According to Domenicali, the discussions have been progressing positively, although each group defends different interests. Still, he believes Formula 1 will be able to define the path for the sport’s future by the end of this year.

“I think there are many positive discussions underway. As you can imagine, there are different points of view, and each defends their position for different reasons. But I believe that by the end of the year we will be in a position to define the right package for the future of Formula 1,” he concluded.
