Fernando Alonso has not yet decided whether he will remain on the Formula 1 grid in 2027, and Aston Martin has taken a wait-and-see stance regarding the Spaniard’s decision. The team says it remains confident of a positive outcome, but acknowledges that the decision lies with the two-time world champion.
Alonso had indicated that he would use the August break to reflect on the continuation of his career, but there has not yet been an official announcement. The uncertainty comes amid a challenging season for Aston Martin, which has faced numerous competitiveness difficulties and remains at the back of the field.
Despite this scenario, the team continues to prioritize Alonso’s retention, with Mike Krack, Aston Martin’s team principal, stating that the aim remains to keep the Spaniard, while stressing that they must respect his own timeline.
“We have always said that the focus is to continue with Fernando. We are quite confident that we will reach a good outcome. On the other hand, we also need to respect Fernando’s pursuit to make his own decision, and we must wait for that,” Krack said.
The Honda, supplier of Aston Martin’s power unit, is also working to improve its outlook. After an update introduced at Zandvoort, the Japanese manufacturer maintains a development plan aimed at 2027 and 2028.
Shintaro Orihara, Honda’s chief engineer in F1, stated that the goal is to deliver a performance boost in 2027, though he avoided promising that the team will be among the top contenders right away: “I’m not saying we will be a frontrunner immediately in 2027, but we will take some big steps,” he added.
Orihara also noted that Honda intends to confirm on the track whether the chosen development direction is the right one. Alonso, for his part, has made clear that the car’s competitiveness is not the main factor guiding his decision, keeping his future open.
