With the arrival of a long holiday and the year coming to an end, inspecting the car before hitting the road typically focuses on more obvious items such as tires, brakes, oil, and fluids. But there are smaller components that also deserve attention. Switches are among those responsible for providing essential information for the operation of the vehicle’s electrical systems and play an important role in engine management, the control of electronic injection, and in various safety, performance, and comfort systems.
Which switches should be included in this assessment before a trip? How to identify signals that a component may present problems? And what precautions are necessary to avoid replacing a part without a proper diagnosis?

These are among the questions received by consumer support and can serve as a starting point to include switches in the vehicle’s pre-trip inspection. According to Intermec Automotive specialist Lucas de Paula, the analysis should consider the characteristics and specific applications of each model
“It is important to understand that the switch should not be analyzed in isolation. When a warning light lights up on the dashboard or the vehicle exhibits a change in operation, it is necessary to perform a diagnosis to identify the origin of the problem and confirm whether there really is a fault in the component,” says Lucas de Paula.
Before traveling, pay attention to the vehicle’s signals
Difficulties starting, the oil light staying on continuously, loss of RPM, increased fuel consumption, loss of performance, irregular engine operation, and the check engine light on the dashboard are among the signs that may indicate problems related to switches. For those planning to hit the road, monitoring these signs before the trip can help identify the need for a technical assessment. However, similar symptoms can have different causes, which reinforces the importance of a proper diagnosis.

Another point of attention is the correct application of the part. Visually similar switches can present different specifications depending on the vehicle, engine, and system in which they will be used. Therefore, correctly identifying the application is essential before installation.
The recommendation is that the technician consult the vehicle and part technical information, in addition to using diagnostic equipment when necessary. Installation should also follow the procedures indicated for each application.
Preventive maintenance before hitting the road
Although not all switches have a specific preventive replacement interval, inspection during the vehicle’s service can help identify signs of wear, damage to connectors, wiring problems, or other conditions that could compromise the component’s operation. The recommendation is not to wait for the vehicle to fail during a trip to investigate these signals.
