F1: Alonso Blasts After Barcelona Qualifying: “We Have a Worse Car and a Worse Engine”

June 13, 2026

Fernando Alonso wants to forget the Barcelona Grand Prix qualifying in Formula 1 this Saturday (the 13th). Racing on home soil, he managed only the last place on the grid, saying that the Aston Martin car is the “worst car” with the “worst engine”.

Right in front of the home crowd, the two-time F1 World Champion finished behind teammate Lance Stroll for the first time in 42 Grands Prix. He was also 1 second behind Valtteri Bottas’ Cadillac and about four seconds off the pole position.

It turns out that for the Spaniard, the result wasn’t a surprise. “I came here knowing we would be last and we were last, so there are no surprises and no one has surprises today,” he told the press.

When asked whether the high speed of the Barcelona track had exposed the AMR26’s problems, Fernando said, “no, no, no. Nothing was exposed. We knew we had the worst car and the worst engine and we have made it clear in every race so far that we need to work on this.”

“In the second half of the year, a new aerodynamic package arrives, a new engine arrives, and we have hope in that. We opted for this strategy, we repeat it every weekend, and we will reach Austria in two weeks and be last in the standings, and you will tell me if this exposes some of the car’s weaknesses. We know the weaknesses, we know we need to work on this and we are working on it,” he continued.
