A series of penalties will shake up the starting grid for the races of the third round of the Formula 2 Championship, held at the Gilles Villeneuve Circuit in Montreal, Canada. The penalties were announced on Friday night (the 22nd), and four drivers will lose positions in both the Sprint and the main race: Rafael Câmara, Alexander Dunne, Oliver Goethe, and Tasanapol Inthraphuvasak.
Second in the classification this afternoon, Câmara will drop three positions on the grids for both races after obstructing Dunne’s quick lap during qualifying. Thus, the Invicta driver from Brazil falls from second to fifth on the grid for Sunday’s race, and drops from ninth to 12th for Saturday’s Sprint.
Dunne, for his part, will also lose three positions on the grids for the two races. The Rodin Motorsport driver, who was third in the standings, impeded Rafael Villagómez’s lap, a driver who defends Van Amersfoort. Thus, in the main race, the Irishman will start from sixth position, while in the Sprint, the driver begins in 11th.
Goethe, the MP Motorsport driver, and Inthraphuvasak, from ART Grand Prix, caused red flags during qualifying. Both struck the protective barrier at Turns 4 of the Canadian circuit and, as punishment, lost their best laps. Thus the Thai drops from 15th to 20th on the grids for both races, while the German drops from 19th to 21st on the grids.
The races will take place starting this Saturday (23), first with the Sprint, scheduled for 15:10. The main race is scheduled for Sunday at 13:05.
