RIP Jean-Marie Balestre, former president dies aged 86

Former president of FISA, now the FIA, has died at the age of 86. Balestre made many controversial decisions as his time as president but will be best remembered for setting up the FFSA which has produced many French world champions.

I remember him as being responsible for some major safety changes in F1 and also for smoe questionable decisions during the Prost vs Senna days – either way, he did his bit for motorsport, made his mark and will be missed.

He also played a central role in the banning of Group B and did tend to make the odd idiotic comment (like rallying should be confined to the race track) a bit like the current incumbent. Although I don’t think he made the front pages for his sexual behaviour.
