Hannu Mikkola won the 1984 Rallye de Portugal in the HB sponsored Audi quattro A2 after a frantic battle with the Lancia Rally of Markku Alen.
The rally was set for a straight fight between Lancia and Audi on the mixed surface event and so it proved, though Markku Alen did surprise with the 2WD Lancia's pace on gravel. Attilio Bettega brought his Lancia 037 home in third as Biasion took fourth in his Totip sponsored example. Jean Ragnotti starred in the Renault 5 Turbo to finish a fine fifth.
The rest of the main opposition all seemed to endure a pretty disastrous rally, with Toivonen crashing out on the Sintra stages while Blomqvist retired after suffering numerous mechanical maladies with his quattro. Rohrl too, had severe mechanical problems and then rolled to eventually finish a lowly sixth.
