Time to have a look at the Global Irish Tarmac Championship in the RallyBuzz best championship poll.
The tarmac series was, up until recently, regarded as one of the best championships in Europe with some suggesting the World. It was spoilt last year with the likes of Loeb, Gronholm and Hirvonen over in preparation for last years Rally Ireland. Also, Ireland was thought to be home of the most World Rally Cars anywhere and entry lists regularly boasted between 25-30 WRC's. This, though, is no longer the case with a recession and an impending change of the technical regulations the ITRC is having to look at itself introspectively at the minute. Obviously the World Rally Cars have been the headline act in recent years and these cars still hold an appeal, but things are changing and the likes of Roy White's MG S2000 add a new diversity which may be built upon in the future.
Even in these lean times the championship still provides some of the most scenic and unique rallying offered in Europe. From the likes of Galway, Killarney and Donegal the championship is guaranteed classic tarmac stages. Even if the entries have been lacking in depth of late the championship will continue and evolve in line with competitor and spectator requirements.
