100mph Radar Traps and Beer Vouchers!

Day 4 - Arusha to Arusha

Kick Energy rally driver Steve Perez maintained his third position overall as day four of the 2009 Kenya Airways East African Safari Rally saw him and co driver Staffan Parmander progress through Tanzania.

In the historic-specification Datsun 260Z, the Chesterfield driver was disappointed when the day's opening stage was cancelled due to a river crossing being washed away, before taking it easy on the second stage through the demanding terrain.

On the third stage Perez set second fastest time behind Gerard Marcy to hold on to third place at tonight's overnight halt at Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge at Usa River near Arusha.

"It was more like Wales than Africa and I'm sure I saw some of our local motor club members out there! I'm happy enough with our progress and hope we can keep it up although there is a big gap to the cars in front. We were overtaking a service barge at over 100mph when we spotted a police radar trap but we couldn't slow down and I was amazed that they simply waved us through! Or at least I think that's what they were doing!! Also, our service crew is rapidly gaining 'beer vouchers' as they continue to help out the other crews, so the plan is they'll be very drunk at the finish!"

The rally heads back into Kenya tomorrow with the crew leaving the Ngurdoto Mountain Lodge at 06.00 local time (03.00 GMT) and scheduled to arrive at the Ol Tukai Lodge, Amboseli at around 16:00 local time.
