One of the stars of South African rally driving, Paul Pfeiffer, died in hospital on Saturday after his car landed in a small dam during the Blue Crane Rally near Caledon.

The motorsport website Rallystar reported he had been driving with his navigator Cindi Harding, when their car left the road and landed upside down in a dam.

Spectators immediately went in to rescue the team and pulled Harding out of the car.

Evidently Pfeiffer managed to get out by himself but rescuers searched frantically inside the car unaware of this.

When he was found in the water outside the car people tried to resuscitate him. After paramedics battled to stabilise him, he was flown to the Caledon Mediclinic where he died.

Paul regularly competed in a VW Golf GTI before acquiring a Mitsubishi Evo 6 in which he started to achieve some notable results.
