Omagh Motor Club Spring Rally (Fivemiletown) 2009 results: John Cairns wins in his Group N Subaru

Strabane driver John Cairns claimed victory following a high attrition rate on the Omagh MC Spring Rally.

Approximately 100 cars started the 12 stage event in the forests of Crocknagrally, Mullaghfad, Jenkin and Doon, south of Fivemiletown. The early pacesetter was the 2WD Ford Focus of Paul Barrett but he succumbed to gearbox failure early on. Local pre-event favourite Eamon Mimnagh was on the pace but also retired his Mitsubishi.

Most of the large crowds turned up to see the battle between Kelly, Heatherington, Barrett, O' Connell and Hamill in the two wheel drive section of the event. Adrian Hetherington came out top after an enthralling battle all day to finish 2nd overall in his Mk11 Escort.

Paul McShea rolled his Sydney Meeke built Ford Orion at the end of SS5 but was quickly righted by spectators and continued to finish 24th. Samantha Thom driving a LHD Peugeot 106, after her bad luck last week at Kirkistown, managed to finish her first stage rally in 54th place out of a total of 58.

Marty McCormack took part in the rally driving the Citroen C2R2 but retired on SS5.
