The Intercontinental Rally Challenge has attracted its latest star recruit after Andreas Mikkelsen confirmed he will enter seven rounds of the series in an M-Sport Ford Fiesta S2000.
Mikkelsen, from Norway, is one of the sport’s hottest prospects and holds the record for being the youngest point-scorer on a world championship rally, a record he set in Sweden in 2008, aged 18.
He will begin his IRC campaign on the fourth round of the series, Rally d’Italia-Sardegna, in June alongside long-term co-driver Ola Fløene.
“This is just fantastic,” said the 20-year-old. “After seeing Mikko Hirvonen’s and M-Sport’s debut with the new Fiesta S2000 in Monte Carlo, I’m sure we have the best package available. My goal is to fight for podium finishes in all the IRC rounds.”
M-Sport boss Malcolm Wilson added: “This will prove to be an exciting season for Andreas. He has already demonstrated that he has the speed and ability to perform well and the Ford Fiesta S2000 has shown its potential by winning in Monte Carlo. Together they should be a good package and I will be watching Andreas’ performances with interest this season.”
Mikkelsen, the reigning Norwegian Group N champion, is no stranger to the IRC after competing on Barum Czech Rally Zlín last August.
