Sebastien Loeb has told Autosport magazine that he will retire from the sport if the FIA choose to run S2000 cars as the headline category in the WRC.
Loeb made the comments after it emerged that the FIA were considering S2000 and Group N as a possible replacement for the current World Rally Car following the recent WMSC meeting.
Loeb told Autosport:
I do not really know about the future. I have heard different things about the latest decisions from the FIA. If we have Super 2000 or Group N, then that is not interesting to drive."
Loeb did say he that he favoured the S2000+ (S2000 and Group N with an added kit of bolt-on parts) technical regulations which the manufacturer teams are keen to adopt. Max Mosely, though, is said to favour the straight switch to just S2000 and Group N, on the basis of cost. The added kit of parts (e.g. rear wing and a turbo charger) appears to be the problem the FIA are having in trying to keep costs to a minimum.
Loeb stated that his preference for the technical regulations would be S2000+:
If we have this, it's not a problem for me. The power should be about the same and that's the main thing.
It doesn't matter if the cars are a bit heavier or have less technology. In fact, if this happens, then it can be more fun, for the spectators as well."
