Two podiums in two categories indicates a good start to the 2012 Autocross championship for the Kick Energy team after 17 year old Zane Young took second in the Quad category on his Autocross debut and Geoff Mayes finished third overall after having to borrow a car for the day.
Round one of the 2012 Kenyan Autocross Championship took place at Jamhuri Park last weekend and featured a category for quads for the first time. Zane Young impressed mightily with second fastest amongst the quads and was pleased to set times comparable to the buggies which are generally the pace setters. I was very happy with my riding this weekend. My quad is currently set up for endurance events but I know we can get more acceleration from it if we change a few small things.
Geoff Mayes had hoped to use his Attacker buggy for this meeting but a last minute water pump failure sidelined the unique Hiyabusa powered buggy. Safaricom dealer Ben Muchemi kindly lent Geoff a Subaru N10 rally car for the day. Despite never having rallied a four wheel drive before Geoff was quickly up to speed and ended the day third overall. I have to say a massive thank you to Ben Muchemi for lending me his Subaru. This kind gesture has helped me pick up valuable points which could be handy at the end of the season. It was a fun day of action and I hope the spectators enjoyed the show!
The Kick Energy team now moves to the Tomlinson Ranch near Nanyuki for the opening round of the Rally Raid Championship. This event takes place on 18 and 19 February and features categories for quads, bikes, buggies and all sorts of modified cars and 4x4’s. Kick Energy driver Simon Sharpe will be one of the event favourites in his supercharged V8 Toyota Platz hybrid.
