Rallye Monte Carlo SS10: Meeke and Hanninen both crash out

Kronos 207 S2000 Rallye Monte Carlo SS10: Meeke and Hanninen both crash out

Kris Meeke and Juho Hanninen have both retired from this year's Monte Carlo Rally as Sebastien Ogier extends his lead.

Kris Meeke crashed quite heavily by all accounts http://blog.krismeeke.com/2009/01/kris-hanninen-out-on-ss10/ after a stunning display in the Peugeot UK 207 on his first outing in an S2000 car and debut in the IRC. He had set a fastest stage time on SS3, was as high as second overall on the event at one stage and was only 59s off the lead before SS10.

Juho Hanninen apparently went off on the first corner of the stage after he too was having a fantastic debut in the diminutive Fabia. He had dominated the event until he had a puncture on SS9 yesterday, but was very much still in contention before his off.

Sebastien Ogier is currently having a dream rally after only being selected last week by the BFGoodrich Drivers Team to contest the event. He now leads the rally by nearly 2 mins from Toni Gardemeister who has been promoted from fifth place after the drivers ahead of him suffered their problems. Freddy Loix drops to third after a costly puncture while Stephane Sarrazin and Jan Kopecky are now fourth and fifth respectively.

The rally concludes tonight with four stages in the dark including two runs over the world renowned Col de Turini.
