Nasser Al-Attiyah was second fastest on the Day 3 stage, from Puerto Madryn to Jacobacci, of Dakar 2009 to move up to second overall behind leader Carlos Sainz.

Al-Attiyah had been 3 minutes ahead of Sainz at one point in the stage but the BMW X3CC driver lost time towards the end to finish 35s up. Sainz in the VW Race Touareg now leads the event by well over 3 minutes from Al-Attiyah.

Giniel de Villiers drops to third overall in his VW and is ahead of the Mitsubishi Pajero Racing Lancer of Stephane Peterhansel who lost over 5 minutes on the stage today. Mitsubishi are not having a great start to the event as they have already lost Hiroshi Masuoka yesterday. Luc Alphand dropped over 30 minutes today after stopping with mechanical problems and is now well down the order.
