Dakar 2009 Day 4 standings: Sainz ahead in close battle with Al-Attiyah

Dakar Dakar 2009 Day 4 standings: Sainz ahead in close battle with Al Attiyah

Carlos Sainz in the VW Touareg won stage 4, from Jacobacci to Neuquen, by a slender six seconds ahead of the BMW of Nasser Al-Attiyah.

Sainz would have won the stage, his second of the event so far, by a greater margin but for a puncture and takes a 3.46 min advantage into the fifth stage. Al-Attiyah was thankful he didn't have any problems today to maintain the pressure on the leader.

Luc Alphand was third quickest on the stage but still lies well off the pace, in eighth place overall, after his fuel starvation problems on Monday in the Mitsubishi Pajero. Meanwhile, Alphand's team-mate Stephane Peterhansel was 7 minutes behind Sainz today, who he says is just too fast for him.
