Teenager Tom Cave from Wales has passed his driving test today and will become the youngest driver to compete on Rally GB, according to wrc.com.

He will be 17 years and 18 days old when he starts the rally on the 3rd December in a Fiesta ST. His driving instructor described him as being a bit "over confident" as Cave had seven minor faults in the test, though you are allowed up to a maximum of 15 to be granted a pass.

Cave has been competing in Latvia for the previous two years where it is legally permitted for for him to drive on the special stages, but his navigator Gemma Price had to drive on the road sections.

Cave commented to wrc.com when he passed the test:

I’m delighted to pass my test today. It was the last hurdle to get over before I could take the start of Wales Rally GB and it’s a huge relief to have it out of the way. Now I can concentrate on the rally and my preparations for the most important motorsport event of my life.”

Our objective for Wales Rally GB is simple; to bring our Group N Ford Fiesta ST to the finish, ideally without using SupeRally. To complete the event on my first attempt, on the same stages as the best drivers on the world, would be an incredible feat for me and a perfect culmination of two years of competition in Latvia."

Tom Cave is reckoned to be one of the UK's exciting future stars and could possibly make it to the top of the sport with the right support.
