Firefighting, first-aid, flag marshalling were just some of the subjects covered at the British Motorsport Marshals Club NI annual training day, which was held on Saturday 12 March at Kirkistown race circuit Co Down, courtesy of the 500 MRCI. The programme reflected the many aspects of motorsport marshalling and was delivered through the use of powerpoint, videos and practical demonstrations. The training day was organised by the club's own MSA trainer Chris Wilson with input from Keith Thompson and Tony Gregory.
The day also gave participants the opportunity to look around the club's newly acquired motorsport rescue unit and the extraction and medical equipment it carries. The purchase of the rescue unit was kindly supported through DCAL's Investment in Motorsport Programme, which was administered by the 2&4 Wheels Motorsport Steering Group.

Committee member Keith Thompson said: "These training days provide a great opportunity for both sides of the marshalling community to get together, whether they have an interest in race or rally marshalling. The motorsport season will shortly in full swing again after the winter break and today provided a great chance to blow some of those winter cobwebs away.
"We hope the attendees have learnt something about the various different disciplines on offer, picked up some new skills and renewed their energy for the season ahead. One aspect that attendees don't often realise is that a lot of their skills are transferrable, such as incident handling and first-aid and could quite easily be used away from the sport."
The day was rounded off with a practical session on firefighting, using fire extinguishers to put out a burning firetray. If you would like to become more involved, contact through www.marshals.co.uk with the first race at Kirkistown on Saturday March 26th.
