Abu Dhabi is in line to join the World Rally Championship within three years under plans to increase the number of global events to 16 by 2015, according to Motorsport News.
WRC promoter Simon Long said plans were already being drawn up to run an event on purpose-built stages by 2012.
Speaking back in 2007, during the BP Ford team sponsorship announcement, Sheikh Sultan Bin Tahnoon Al Nahyan, chairman of the Abu Dhabi tourism authority, said: "Our long-term ambition is to see Abu Dhabi host a WRC event."
